Lectures and Exercises

In the following, you will find brief information about the courses offered at the Department of International Economic Policy. For more information, please refer to the module handbook on the website of the examination office.

Empirical Economic Policy (4 SWS)
(International Economic Policy III)

The course alternates between econometric methods (in particular time series analysis) and the economic policy issues, such as the effects of money and fiscal policy, sustainability of debt ratios and long-term effects of education policy. An important component of the course is a tutorial in the computer lab that focuses on working with data, statistical application programs (EViews, Stata), and the application of methods and concepts discussed in lecture. The introductory class in statistics is the basis for successful participation in the course. Advanced knowledge of econometrics is not required. This course will be taught in English.

International Finance (2 SWS)
(International Economic Policy II)

The lecture will analyze topics in open macroeconomics, in particular balance of payments, theories of exchange rates, exchange rate regimes, currency areas, as well as monetary and fiscal policies in the open economy. This course will be taught in English.

International Trade (2 SWS)
(International Economic Policy I)

In this course, we are going to analyze the effects of international trade on national economies based on different trade theories. Additionally, we will study the welfare effects of tariffs and factor endowments on trade and growth with the special focus on strategic trade policy. The current implementation of different trade policies is also the subject of the lecture. This course will be taught in English.

Economic Policy of the European Union (2 SWS)
(International Economic Policy IV)

This course will help students gain a basic understanding of the facts, theories, goals, and controversies underlying the European integration. The lecture (taught in English) provides an overview of the historical development of the European Union, its institutions and rules with the focus on economic policies and their evaluation in light of economic theory.
The lecture is thematically organized in three blocks:
1) History of the EU, laws, institutions, budget and decision-making;
2) Microeconomics of economic integration and EU micro policies;
3) Macroeconomics of monetary integration and EU monetary and fiscal policies.
Students can get credit for this course only if they have not yet taken a course from the module WIWI-M-16001-EC: International Economic Policy M I.
